Chaps – a brief profile

Chaps, based at Bar Hill just outside Cambridge, undertakes plumbing, heating and mechanical services contracts ranging in value from a few thousand pounds up to £2million. Formed in 2000 by Ian Corney, of Corney Heating and Plumbing Services, the company offers its services within three categories:

Domestic. Work includes design and installation services for new build, the refurbishment of residential properties, private houses and housing associations. All aspects of plumbing, heating, electrical and building works are undertaken.

Partnering. Chaps forms long-term partnerships with local authorities, housing associations and developers. Its work covers heating, plumbing, electrical, and kitchen and bathroom installations.

Commercial. Chaps provides mechanical and electrical services for new build and refurbished commercial developments. The company’s full design and installation service is employed on all types of contracts, including sports halls, care homes and schools.

For Chaps, the Cambridgeshire heating and mechanical services specialist, knowing the precise location of its vehicles and mobile staff is essential.

This – and the fact its original system has proved unreliable – is the main reason the Bar Hill company has appointed Quartix to provide 24-hour, real-time tracking.

System already making impressive savings

Chaps runs 44 cars and vans, and using the on-screen system is already making impressive savings through the fleet’s more efficient use. At the same time, it is benefiting from the system’s accurate record-keeping ability.

Raine Holmes, finance manager, explains: “For example, car drivers pay back their personal mileage, which the system records.

“Managers confirm details through the system”

“Vans are provided to Chaps employees for business use only, and private use is not allowed. On-site drivers are required to fill in timesheets, and the contract managers are able to confirm these details through the system.

“Of course, if we had a tax inspection we would have to prove they weren’t using the vans for personal use, and the system enables us to do just that.”

For immediate financial reasons Chaps has opted to connect to the Quartix tracking service using its flexible pay-as-you-go solution – with the intention of switching to its more cost-effective leasing/purchase product at a later date.

Twenty-four vehicles on PAYG scheme

Currently, Chaps has 24 vehicles using the PAYG scheme, each fitted with Quartix’s own-design tracking unit. However, as more leases with its old supplier run out – and as new vehicles are added – the company will ensure its entire fleet is linked to the Quartix system.

The reason, says the company, is not simply the system’s reliability – it has not broken down since Quartix was appointed – but also the standard of it’s after sales service.

“They get back to you straight away”

Ms Holmes adds: “You ring or email and they get back to you straight away. Everything happens exactly as you would expect of a professional company. They are a very good team, indeed.”

The Canute Group – a brief profile

When Canute Haulage Ltd was established in 1977 it had just two vehicles for collecting and delivering bricks and blocks for builders in the Purfleet area.

Today, the privately owned Canute Group operates a fleet of some 750 purpose-made vehicles to cater for markets as diverse as engineering, retail, construction, agriculture, healthcare, industrial and warehousing.

With headquarters at Purfleet and locations throughout the UK and Ireland, Canute prides itself on having the infrastructure, resources and experience to develop bespoke supply chain solutions.

Among its many clients are organisations large and small, including numerous familiar brands and household names.

Annual cost savings of around £300,000 are being made by the Canute Group, one of the fastest growing global supply chain providers, which has equipped more than 300 of its 750 vehicles with Quartix Pay As You Go real-time tracking.

The £100million company, with sites across the UK and Ireland, turned to Quartix after trialling two systems. The first suffered from a spate of breakdowns the second was removed when the operating company went into administration.

Mark Longhurst, IT manager, explained: “The first system had been installed on our recovery fleet, which operates Government contracts these contracts dictate that we must have a fully operational tracking system so that we can update them as to the whereabouts of a vehicle at all times.”

Canute approached Quartix for a raft of reasons, among them the company’s transparent pricing, straightforward pay-as-you-go rental scheme (no long-term contract), potential for cost savings, and the GPS system’s functionality and ease of use.

‘The team bends over backwards to assist’

Mr Longhurst added: “The reasons we chose Quartix are all the above, which have been met fully, and the after-sales support, which has exceeded expectations.

“In fact, the team, ranging from the support desk to managing director Andy Walters, bends over backwards to assist when needed, which is refreshing.”

As for cost savings, Canute’s financial director, Steve Ely, calculated the company saves as much as £1,000 per vehicle per year – an annual total of around £300,000.

‘Depots use the system to re-route vehicles’

Mark Longhurst agreed: “There is definitely a cost saving per vehicle as idle times have decreased and our depots use the system to re-route their vehicles to new jobs whilst they are out on the road.

“In addition, and something I witnessed recently whilst out with one of our clients: there was a query on vehicle movements we had the information to hand and on that particular occasion the system potentially saved us £200-£300.

“Also, there has been a decrease in the number of calls made to and from drivers the less time our drivers and other staff are on the phone to each other the more they can focus on other areas of business.”

Canute’s first telematics trials involved just a small number of vehicles, and it was with Quartix’s appointment that a full deployment was commissioned.

‘The biggest benefit is Quartix themselves’

The results, said Mr Longhurst, range from reduced costs to added value for customers, which “in itself brings financial benefits, including cost savings and new contracts.”

However, he considers the biggest benefit of using Quartix “is Quartix themselves.”

He concluded: “The after-sales support is excellent and we have a fantastic working relationship with the entire team, from the bottom all the way to the top.

“Andy Walters, once said to me that his ‘after sales support was good, how else could a company expect to keep its customers and build a relationship?’ Andy and his team have proved that this is their ethos and it is one which I wish all companies would adopt.”

Now, based on its positive experience with Quartix, Canute is working with Andy Walters to develop the systems further and look for more cost and control benefits.
